“Probiotic” is a broad category, not a promise that every product works in the same way. A microorganism is identified by genus, species and strain. Research on one strain cannot automatically be transferred to another, even when their names look similar.
Identity comes before the headline number
CFU, or colony-forming units, is one way to describe the amount of viable microorganisms. A large CFU number by itself does not explain strain identity, the evidence behind a formulation or how the organisms are protected through manufacture and storage.
Four details worth checking
- Strain identity: look for clearly identified organisms, not only a generic species name.
- Declared amount: check whether the CFU statement refers to manufacture or the end of shelf life.
- Finished formulation: consider the complete product, including prebiotics, nutrients, format and serving directions.
- Storage: follow the label because heat and moisture can affect product quality.
Consistency still matters
A supplement only becomes a routine when it is practical enough to use as directed. Taste, sachet format, timing and storage all affect whether daily use is realistic. Individual experiences vary, and probiotics should not be presented as treatments for disease.
